Universe in the Park is a popular outreach program of the University of Wisconsin – Madison Department of Astronomy. A typical Universe in the Park session begins just after sunset with a 30-40-minute talk and slide show about astronomy. The talks are presented to audiences of all ages. After the discussion, weather permitting, Universe in the Park sets up a moderate aperture (8-10 inches) telescope and provides park visitors the opportunity to view available astronomical objects. Universe in the Park includes a RAIN OR SHINE presentation on astronomy, including recent astronomical news (30-40 minutes), and a weather-dependent star party, where visitors have the opportunity to view available astronomical objects through a telescope. Though all are welcome, the talk is best suited for ages 8+, and telescope viewing for ages 4+. At the conclusion of the talk, weather permitting, we set up a moderate aperture (8″-10″) telescope and provide park visitors the opportunity to view available astronomical objects. UitP sessions run as long as there are people interested in looking through the telescope, and the parks typically close before the interest has been sated.
