Highschool Youth “Thawed Hearts” New Year Event – Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church. 9am-12pm. Copper Falls State Park – Annual First Day Hike. Kick off 2026 with fresh air, snowy scenery, and community spirit at the First Day Hike at Copper Falls State Park. 1-4pm. Participants will gather at the Red Granite Falls Trailhead for an afternoon of winter adventure. Gather in the Loon Lake Beach parking area for beginning festivities. Ring in the New Year by snowshoeing through beautiful wooded trails, with your choice of 2-mile or 4-mile routes suitable for various ages and skill levels. Whether you’re an experienced snowshoer or trying it for the first time, this guided winter outing offers a refreshing start to the year. Cable Natural History Museum – Scandinavian Rag Rug Workshop. 9am – 12pm $20.00 – $30.00 Scandinavian loop weaving is a simple and durable technique that uses no thread or looms, and turns trash into treasure! Bring 1-2 old bed sheets (any size will work) or other fabric that can be easily torn into strips, and a pair of sharp scissors. Some extra materials will be on hand. Dribbling Dockers at the Ashland Elementary School Gymnasium, 9-10am. Dribbling Dockers registration is FREE for all K-2 students. this is an introductory basketball program. Cable Natural History Museum – Winter Animal Tracking Field Day (Master Naturalist Advanced Training). 10am – 4pm. Meet for an introduction before carpooling to areas within the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest in search of the tracks of our local Beings, including wolf, coyote, fox, fisher, bobcat, elk, and deer. Depending on the snow depth and location of tracks, tracking may be done on snowshoes over uneven terrain. A limited number of adult snowshoes are available for use from the Museum with advanced notice. Participants must provide their own bag lunch. The field session is dependent on weather conditions. Yin Yoga – Event Horizon. 10am. A mindful style of yoga that uses longer holds to access the fascia and connective tissue in the body. In Yin Yoga postures are more passive asanas, mainly done on the floor. It is not uncommon to see postures held for 3-7 minutes. The time spent in these postures is much like time spent in meditation. Yin yoga offers much deeper access to the body, particularly the fascia. Fascia connects all connective tissues (that means the muscles, bones, tendons, ligaments, and blood) You will leave feeling balanced and renewed. Guided Snowshoe Hikes – Copper Falls State Park. 1-4pm. Visitors are invited to experience the beauty of winter at Copper Falls State Park through a series of guided snowshoe hikes led by the Friends of Copper Falls State Park. These seasonal outings offer an opportunity to explore the park’s snowy landscapes while learning about its natural features. Participants will park and gather at the Red Granite Parking Area. Each hike will cover approximately 2–4 miles, depending on conditions, and will traverse hilly forest terrain and deep snow areas. Attendees are encouraged to dress for winter weather, bring a water bottle, and wear snowshoes. Snowshoes are required. Hot cocoa will be provided following each hike. If weather or trail conditions require cancellation, a decision will be made by 9 a.m. on the morning of the hike and announced on the Friends of Copper Falls State Park Facebook page. From microbes to forest managers, ecosystems depend on rotting wood. Scientist Dr. Amy Zanne examines the fate of carbon stored in plants, including dead wood, and how factors such as temperature, moisture, fungi, termites, and differences in construction influence carbon emissions as plants decompose. (Master Naturalist Advanced Training) Graduates of the Wisconsin Master Naturalist program and others are invited to spend a weekend learning about nature in winter with Master Naturalist Instructor Emily Stone and other experts. The training begins at 1pm on Thursday and will engage students in a variety of indoor and outdoor activities with experts near Washburn, WI. We’ll end by 1pm on Saturday.
