    Pastel Painting: Where Land and Water Meet with Diana Randolph. 10am-3pm. Use your own color photos of wetland landscapes as inspiration to create unique pastel paintings on paper.  Explore the art elements of value, color, and texture in your composition as you interpret the landscape, creating the illusion of three-dimensional space on a flat paper surface. The instructor, professional artist Diana Randolph of Once in a Blue Moon Studio, will demonstrate these concepts. You’ll practice many pastel painting techniques by layering pigment on various types of pastel paper. You’ll have the opportunity to view the Museum’s current exhibit, The Wetland Way.     National Trails Day Celebration – North Country Trail Association Chequemegon Chapter Hikes 2026. For all three Wisconsin NCT Chapters at Highland Town Hall, 9360 County Road S, Lake Nebagamon, with choice of morning hikes and noon potluck, to be held rain or shine. Hike #1 (meet at 8:30am) will be from Highland Town Hall to Jersett Creek campsite and back (5.5 miles), and Hike #2 (meet at 9am) will be from Gaylord Nelson Portal to Highland Town Hall (5.0 miles). RSVP not required, but for timely alerts about schedule changes, please RSVP to che@northcountrytrail.org. Join artist-photographer and former aeronautical engineer Mary Jo Hoffman renowned for her unique and personal engagement with the natural world for two Immersion classes on June 6, 2026 at Wild Rice Retreat. Best known for her project, “STILL” where every day for over a decade, she made a photograph of found nature – no subject too small or too ordinary. For Hoffman, this daily ritual cracked open profound revelations about the connectedness of all things, the importance of place, and the creative life.     Save the Date! Ashland County’s 31st Annual Cleansweep Hazardous Materials Collection. New Location! This year we’re at the ABC Raceway on Butterworth Road, about 3 miles south of Ashland between Highway 13 on the east and Beaser Ave on the west, on Thursday, June 11 from 2-6pm. Ashland County residents, businesses, farms, and schools can bring toxic and hazardous products to this event. Most can be disposed of at no charge, although some items (fluorescent light bulbs, batteries) charge a small fee.  Check the web site for more information about what materials are and aren’t accepted. Farms and businesses need to pre-register by calling Northwest Regional Planning Commission at 715-635-2197.  Help keep dangerous products and chemicals out of our local waterways and landfills by disposing of them safely at this event! Residents of neighboring counties can participate in Ashland County. Also accepted are controlled medications and prescriptions, and over the counter medications. Many thanks to the raceway’s board of directors for hosting the event!     Creatures of the Night Series: Birds – Friends of Copper Falls State Park. 7-8pm. Participants will gather at the historic log pavilion near the Doughboy Trailhead to learn about owls and other nighttime bird species and discover how artificial light affects wildlife. Following the presentation, attendees will have the opportunity to help locate owls known to inhabit areas in and around the park.     Dragonfly Ecology and Identification – Cable Natural History Museum. 12:30-3:30pm. Cost: $15 member/$25 non-member. (Master Naturalist Advanced Training). Discover the unique and interesting attributes of dragonflies that have helped them become the most proficient predator on the planet. Explore the life stages of incomplete metamorphosis and how dragonflies spend most of their life underwater. Learn tips and tricks to identify dragonflies and damselflies. This program will be taught by Jeff Fischer, past President of the Wisconsin Dragonfly Society and founding member of the Minnesota Dragonfly Society. Meet at the Cable Natural History Museum for an introductory lecture, then carpool to Cap Creek Landing on the Namekagon River. You don’t have to be a certified Master Naturalist to participate!     Royalty Pageant & Feast – Red Cliff Band of Lake Superior Chippewa Indians. 5-8pm. The Royalty Pageant for Red Cliff’s 48th Annual Pow Wow is set for Tuesday, June 30, 2026 at the Leo LaFernier Sr Bezhigogaabaw Cultural Center! A potluck feast is scheduled for 5 PM, followed by the pageant contest. The pageant is open to enrolled Red Cliff Tribal Members and Red Cliff descendants.     • Guided Mural Trolley Tours -The 8-block Main Street Business District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, is the background for a fascinating tour through Ashland’s history as seen through the eyes of Ashland’s mural artists Kelly Meredith and Susan Prentice Martinsen. Trolley Tours are on a first-come, first-serve basis. Pick-up Location in the parking lot of the Bay Area Civic Center, 320 4th Ave West. The tour will be approximately 75 minutes long. Tickets are purchased on the Trolley. Cost: $5.00 per person.  Children under 6 are FREE!  (Cash only accepted, you pay on the Trolley.)
