    Celebrate Earth Day with “Work, Play, Earth Day!” at Copper Falls State Park. Mellen, WI – Join Copper Falls State Park for a fun and rewarding Earth Day celebration during “Work, Play, Earth Day!” from 9am to 12noon. Volunteers of all ages are invited to help spruce up the park for summer while enjoying time outdoors and giving back to nature.  Volunteers will gather at the New Reservable Pavilion for a 9am orientation, followed by a variety of light work tasks including cleaning the concession building, raking, picking up windfall, and lopping branches along scenic trails. All activities will take place rain or shine, so come dressed for the weather and the work. Please bring gloves, a water bottle, bug spray, a leaf rake if you have one, and wear long sleeves. For safety reasons, no pets, please.  At noon, volunteers will be treated to a delicious lunch including chili, hot dogs, salads, desserts, and beverages. Be sure to stick around for door prize drawings at lunch and take time to enjoy the park’s breathtaking waterfalls and spring wildflowers.  For more information, please contact the Copper Falls State Park office at 715-274-5123.     Chequamegon Veterans Center – History Speaker Series – In Copperation with Iron Jaw Productions Presents: Endsieg – The Battle of Berlin and the Fall of Nazi Germany, featuring Walter Gurske to mark the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II in Europe.  In April of 1945 Hitler’s Germany made an apocalyptic final stand amid the ruins of its capitol, sealing the fate of a dictator and those who had followed him.  Our second scheduled speaker on September 18th at 6pm will be published author Mike O’Connor who will be speaking on the life of Poplar native, WWII fighter ace and Medal of Honor recipient Major Richard Bong.  We have two more possible speakers that will be announce in the near future.     Friends of Copper Falls State Park. Join us on New Moon Night Walk and enjoy night skies in the park! Meet at the park contact station at 8 pm. We will visit 6-8 sites throughout the park where our night light quality measurements will be taken in preparation for Dark Skies Designation for Copper Falls! Our walk will be minimally invasive to the nocturnal landscape and wildlife during this critical spring nesting/mating season. We will walk quietly in open spaces, not disturbing the landscape with noise or unnecessary artificial light. Bring your red headlights/flashlights and binoculars.     Memorial Day Remembrance Walk and Ceremony at MIHPA Veterans Memorial Garden-Please join the Madeline Island Historical Preservation Association immediately following the Memorial Day Ceremony at the Town Dock, LaPointe from 11:30-12:30pm. We will walk from the Town Dock up Colonel Woods Avenue to the MIHPA Heritage Center. There we will gather around the Veteran’s Honor Garden for a flag raising ceremony, songs by the summer choir and the laying of new pavers in the Honor Garden.
