Discover the Historic Fish Hatchery – A Local Treasure!
Have you ever wondered what goes on behind the scenes at the historic Fish Hatchery? Since 1897, this beautiful facility has been raising over 100,000 trout each year to be released into inland lakes, helping support local ecosystems.
The R.D. Pike Building: Step back in time as you walk around the R.D. Pike building, built in 1897 as both a hatchery and the residence for the superintendent and their family.
Restoration in Progress: While the old hatchery is undergoing restoration and is not currently open for tours, visitors can still explore its fascinating history! Look for signage and QR codes around the site to learn about the building’s significance. The R.D. Pike Building was listed in 1981 and registered on the National Register of Historic Buildings and the State of Wisconsin Register of Historic Places in 1989.
Visit the Newer Facility: The visitor center is open daily from 8 AM to 3 PM. It’s perfect for families! Inside, you can view a large fish tank featuring several types of fish, including two majestic sturgeon. Don’t miss the video exhibit that shows the fascinating journey of the hatchery’s fish—from egg to release into Lake Superior and Michigan.
We invite you to stop by, learn about the hatchery’s legacy, and appreciate its role in our community.
