18th Annual Big Water Film Festival – Bay Theater. You’ll see a great roster of short, feature, documentary and animated films from all over the globe, with this year adding more options. The Festival will take place at Honest Dog Books, 38 S 2nd St in Bayfield on Thursday, January 15; at the Bay Theater, 420 Main St W in Ashland on Friday and Saturday, January 16 and 17, 2026, and online from January 18 to February 1. An exhilarating mystery by the creators/writers of “Murder She Wrote” and “Columbo,” which promises to leave you laughing and guessing “who did it” all the way through! Evening shows 7pm. Dribbling Dockers at the Ashland Elementary School Gymnasium, 9-10am. Dribbling Dockers registration is FREE for all K-2 students. This is an introductory basketball program. The goal of this program is to teach fundamental skills of the game of basketball to youth in fun, organized and educational ways. This class is taught by adult coaches and High School students-athletes from the Ashland High School boys’ and girls’ basketball programs under the direction of the Ashland Athletic Department. Guided Snowshoe Hikes – Copper Falls State Park. 1-4pm. Visitors are invited to experience the beauty of winter at Copper Falls State Park through a series of guided snowshoe hikes led by the Friends of Copper Falls State Park. Participants will park and gather at the Red Granite Parking Area. Each hike will cover approximately 2–4 miles, depending on conditions, and will traverse hilly forest terrain and deep snow areas. Attendees are encouraged to dress for winter weather, bring a water bottle, and wear snowshoes. Snowshoes are required. Hot cocoa will be provided following each hike. If weather or trail conditions require cancellation, a decision will be made by 9am on the morning of the hike and announced on the Friends of Copper Falls State Park Facebook page. An admission pass is required for vehicles entering the park. Park location: 36764 Copper Falls Rd, Mellen. These guided snowshoe hikes are sponsored by the Friends of Copper Falls State Park. Cable Natural History Museum – The Afterlife of Plants. (Master Naturalist Advanced Training). 1-2pm. A tree may be more alive when it’s dead. From microbes to forest managers, ecosystems depend on rotting wood. Scientist Dr. Amy Zanne examines the fate of carbon stored in plants, including dead wood, and how factors such as temperature, moisture, fungi, termites, and differences in construction influence carbon emissions as plants decompose. She will share her research over Zoom. Attend from home on your own device or watch the talk from the Museum’s classroom. You don’t have to be a certified Master Naturalist to participate! Cable Natural History Museum – Wild about Winter Ecology. (Master Naturalist Advanced Training) Graduates of the Wisconsin Master Naturalist program and others are invited to spend a weekend learning about nature in winter with Master Naturalist Instructor Emily Stone and other experts. The training begins at 1pm on Thursday and will engage students in a variety of indoor and outdoor activities with experts near Washburn, WI. We’ll end by 1pm on Saturday. Check our website for updates on this year’s topics. All meals are included. Cost is $180 for commuters and $240 with two-night stay at a private lodge near Lake Superior. Landmark Conservancy & Mt. Ashwabay: Candlelight Snowshoe Hike and Nordic Ski. 6-8pm. Bring your friends and family for a magical adventure in the Northwoods! Candlelit luminaries will guide your way along a one-mile loop, groomed for Nordic skiing and snowshoeing.
