Cave Conditions: Not Accessible Centuries of wave action, freezing, and thawing have sculpted shorelines throughout Apostle Islands National Lakeshore. Some of the Great Lakes' most spectacular scenery occurs where these forces interact with sandstone to create extensive sea caves. Nature has carved delicate arches, vaulted chambers, and honeycombed passageways into cliffs along the mainland near the Lakeshore's western boundary North of Meyers Beach. People come to Apostle Islands National Lakeshore in winter to visit the sea caves and witness Lake Superior's ever-changing handiwork.

Ore Dock

Construction of the Ore Dock began in 1916. Originally it was 900 feet long. In 1925 an addition was completed bringing the dock to its present length of 1800 feet. It is 80 feet high, 59 feet wide and the largest concrete structure of its kind. Iron-ore mined in the Upper Penninsula of Michigan was shipped from this dock. The shipping ended in the mid 1960s. At one time there were five such docks in Ashland.

Tern Island

Tern Island is located just off the shores of Bayview Park on U.S. Highway 2 West in Ashland. This island produces 62 percent of the common terns in the Lake Superior region. Tjis site is a peir remnant called the Ashland Pier. During the winter of 1985-86 the island was rebuilt by volunteers. The common tern is an endangered species.
