Northern Great Lakes Visitor Center presents, “Children’s Storytime- Sport: Ship Dog of the Great Lakes” from 10am-11am. Join us for children’s story time and book signing with Pamela Cameron as she reads from her new picture book, Sport: Ship Dog of the Great Lakes. In 1914 crew members of the lighthouse tender Hyacinth rescued a stray puppy from the Milwaukee River and named him Sport. For the next twelve years, this charming Newfoundland-retriever mix lived the life of a ship dog, helping the Hyacinth crew as they carried supplies to lighthouses and maintained the buoys and other safety features around Lake Michigan. Sport quickly became a valued companion to his crew and a recognizable mascot of the lake — making friends in every port. In this beautifully illustrated children’s book based on historical documents and photographs, readers share in Sport’s adventures while discovering the various ways lighthouse tender ships helped keep the lake safe for others. Helpful diagrams, a map, and a historical note supplement this engaging story for young readers.Pamela Cameron has been an elementary and middle school librarian and a public librarian in Wisconsin and Michigan. She is a member of the Association for Great Lakes Maritime History, the Great Lakes Lighthouse Keepers Association, and the Great Lakes Historical Society. This program is sponsored by the Wisconsin Historical Society. For more information, visit www.nglvc.org or call 715-685-9983.

Northern Great Lakes Visitor Center presents, “Dam It: Why Beavers Matter” from 7-9pm. In Eager: The Surprising, Secret Life of Beavers and Why They Matter, environmental author Ben Goldfarb reveals that our modern idea of what a healthy landscape looks like and how its functions is wrong, distorted by the fur trade that once trapped out millions of beavers from North America’s lakes and rivers. The consequences of losing beavers were profound: streams eroded, wetlands dried up, and species from salmon to swans lost vital habitat. Today, a growing coalition of “Beaver Believers”-including scientists, ranchers, and passionate citizens―recognizes that ecosystems with beavers are far healthier, for humans and non-humans alike, than those without them. In his May 9 presentation, Goldfarb will describe beaver biology, ecology, and history; detail the many environmental benefits provided by beavers, including habitat creation, water storage, and pollution filtration; and detail how landowners and municipalities around the country are learning to coexist with these sometimes-challenging rodents. The presentation will also touch upon beavers’ role in Wisconsin ecology and their unique management status within the state. Program sponsored by Friends of North Pikes Creek. For more information, call 715-685-9983 or visit www.nglvc.org.
