    Take a Hike on National Trails Day! Rainbow Lake Wilderness Through-hike. 9am-about 2pm. Meet hike leader, Mel Baughman, retired forestry professor, at NCT parking area at the south boundary of Rainbow Lake Wilderness on Forest Road 392 (Reynard Lake Road). From there we will carpool to the northern boundary of Rainbow Lake Wilderness on Forest Road 228 (North Delta Road). During a 3 1/2-hour hike (6.4 miles) to the south boundary, Mel will periodically talk about principles of forest ecology and trail design. Some sections of this route were closed in 2018 due to flooding, but we will hike these sections or re-routes to discuss how to avoid and repair damage. From 1-2pm, Ramona Shackleford, Director of the Northwoods Cooperative Weed Management Area, will present a program “Invasive Terrestrial Plants of the Northwoods”. Shackleford will help you identify the most invasive terrestrial plants of Northern Wisconsin and describe their negative impacts and methods of control. If you have a mystery plant growing in your yard, bring a fresh sample to the Visitor Center from 2-4 pm and have our biologists identify it for you! See Potato River Falls, take a 3 mile (round-trip) hike on the North Country Trail to a scenic outlook, End meet up at Wren Falls. There is about a 25 minutes drive to the first waterfalls. Wear shoes for wet, muddy conditions. Must be able to walk along a rustic trail with rugged terrain. There will be some great photo opportunities. Bring binoculars if you are interested in bird watching. Anyone who wants to keep hiking, exploring more waterfalls, we can point you in the right direction for more fun spots nearby!
